Fortinet has issued an urgent security patch for a critical SQL injection vulnerability affecting its FortiWeb web application firewall, tracked as CVE-2025-25257. With a CVSS score of 9.6, this flaw demands immediate attention from users and administrators.
π What Is CVE-2025-25257?
The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of SQL elements (CWE-89
) in FortiWeb’s Fabric Connector component, particularly in the function get_fabric_user_by_token
, which interacts with various API endpoints:
/api/fabric/device/status
/api/v[0-9]/fabric/widget/[a-z]+
/api/v[0-9]/fabric/widget
This security gap allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary SQL commands via specially crafted HTTP/HTTPS requests using a manipulated Bearer token in the Authorization header.
βοΈ Impacted FortiWeb Versions
The following versions are vulnerable and must be upgraded:
Affected Version Range | Secure Version to Upgrade To |
---|---|
7.6.0 β 7.6.3 | 7.6.4 or higher |
7.4.0 β 7.4.7 | 7.4.8 or higher |
7.2.0 β 7.2.10 | 7.2.11 or higher |
7.0.0 β 7.0.10 | 7.0.11 or higher |
Security researcher Kentaro Kawane (GMO Cybersecurity) was credited for the discovery. His prior reports also uncovered major flaws in Cisco ISE products.
π‘οΈ How the Exploit Works
Attackers exploit the flawed function to directly inject harmful SQL queries into the database without sanitization. This opens the door to:
- Unauthorized data access
- Database manipulation
- Remote Code Execution via
SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE
and Python execution
π§ Fortinetβs Fix and Recommendations
To remediate the issue, Fortinet has:
- Replaced vulnerable query strings with prepared SQL statements
- Issued patches for all affected versions
Until patches are deployed, users should disable the HTTP/HTTPS administrative interface as a precaution.
β οΈ Why It Matters
Fortinet products have been actively targeted by threat actors in past breaches. Delaying updates could result in serious risks like data theft or system compromise.
